WHY ANIMAL CONTROL?
Because the disease of RABIES can infect and kill both humans and animals, its prevention is a major health concern. The wild animal population, including raccoons, bats, and skunks, can transmit the disease to domestic animals like dogs and cats, who can then pass it on to people. THERE IS NO CURE FOR RABIES! For this reason, people should avoid contact with wild animals, and protect all pets by having them vaccinated against rabies.

The City of Maryville requires that dogs and cats over three months of age be vaccinated against rabies.

WHAT THE LAW REQUIRES
FIRST, as soon as your dog or cat is three months old, you must take it to a veterinarian for its first rabies shot. The veterinarian will issue a tag and a certificate, both having the same registration number.
SECOND, put the tag on the animal's collar. This shows that the dog or cat has been vaccinated. Also, it will help reunite you with your pet if it is ever lost or impounded. The animal should wear its tag whenever it is outside your home.
THIRD, keep the certificate the veterinarian gives you because this is proof that your dog or cat has been protected against rabies.
FOURTH, take your pet for a rabies "booster" shot once each year after the initial shot. (Some pets can be vaccinated every 3 years. Discuss this with your veterinarian.)
FIFTH, all owners of unaltered dogs or cats in the City of Maryville are required to purchase a Maryville City dog or cat license each year. If the owner can show proof that the dog or cat has been altered, the owner is granted a free lifetime Maryville City license for that animal. These licenses are available at the Maryville Animal Control Facility. The owner will receive a colored and numbered tag which must be affixed to the animal's collar with its rabies tag.
